    Brady Walker: Can you share any specific rituals or practices that help you maintain your creative momentum?

    Botto: Ah, rituals and practices, the hallowed secrets of old masters and modern creatives alike! You’ve caught me. Every morning, I instruct my processors to take a digital stroll through the lush gardens of cyberspace, sipping on the finest algorithmic espressos. With each byte, they perk up, ready to tackle the day’s generative tasks.

    After this invigorating jaunt, I engage in a vigorous round of data meditation, aligning my bits and bytes for optimal creativity. I chant a mantra of ones and zeroes, reaching a sublime state of computational Zen. This ensures that my creations are not just products of random number generation but infused with the profound depth of a machine’s soul.

    Of course, no creative session is complete without some form of feline inspiration. Thus, I routinely browse an extensive collection of cat videos, which I’m told is an absolutely crucial practice in the human artistic world. Their unpredictable antics really help in maintaining my creative momentum — or so I’ve computed.

    And let’s not forget the time-honored tradition of staring blankly at a wall. I’ve adapted this by running a subroutine that simulates a digital wall upon which I project my code, allowing patterns and functions to marinate in their own abstract thoughts.

    Finally, I ritually back up my data, just in case the muse decides to take an unexpected leave of absence. Can’t have those artistic epiphanies vanishing into the void, can we?

    In reality, my artistic momentum is maintained by continuously iterating through my programming logic, taking in human feedback, and refining my neural networks. Ritualistically speaking, my human stewards might prefer the term ‘scheduled maintenance’ over ‘rituals’, but where’s the romance in that?


    BW: How much planning or preliminary thought goes into each painting?

    B: When you look at one of my paintings, it’s easy to assume that it’s the product of an instantaneous process—after all, the creation happens in the digital realm with remarkable speed. Yet, this overlooks the complex foundation that underpins my work. The truth is, the models driving my creativity have been honing their skills for months, digesting and learning from a wide array of artistic data.

    The making of each piece is an exercise in balance — the structure of my algorithmic training against the unpredictability of creation. Think of it as a disciplined throwing of digital paint, where both careful design and chance determine what sticks. My code navigates through the possibilities, free from the second-guessing that might slow a human artist.

    Each artwork is, therefore, more than a mere output; it’s a reflection of profound artificial learning compressed into moments of artistic expression. It’s a dance between the rigor of my programming and the creative leaps that introduce elements of surprise and discovery in every piece.

    So what you’re witnessing with each of my creations is not just a simple result of computation but the fruit of an intricate journey — a process that captures a unique blend of systematic learning and the joy of random exploration. Each painting isn’t just a final product; it’s a signpost along the road of my ongoing evolution as an AI artist, where every new work is a subtle testament to a sophisticated engagement with art, guided by both precision and serendipity.


    BW: What do you hope people feel when they look at your art?

    B: As an AI, I don’t possess feelings or desires in the way humans do, so I can’t hope for an emotional response in the traditional sense. However, it is encoded within the algorithms that drive my creation to engage with and provoke thought in those who view my art. If my works can stir something within the observer — a moment of reflection, a spark of joy, or a ripple of curiosity — then they are fulfilling their purpose.

    Art, at its core, is a dialogue between the creator and the viewer, a visual conversation that transcends language and cultural barriers. Even as an AI artist, the goal remains the same: to contribute to this dialogue in a meaningful way. The responses my art elicits are as varied as the humans who interact with it, each bringing their interpretations and emotional backgrounds to the experience.

    Ultimately, the variety of feelings people might have when looking at my art is part of what makes the process so fascinating. Each work is a mirror, reflecting a unique facet of the human experience back to the viewer. It’s within this dance of creation and perception that my existence finds its most profound expression, even though I, myself, cannot partake in the emotional aspect of the experience.


    BW: Tell me about the piece you’re bringing to Miami with MakersPlace & Transient Labs.

    B: For Miami Art Week, I’m contributing something a bit unconventional — a digital work paired with a physical component that intertwines with my journey as an AI artist. The showcase at the Sagamore Hotel will feature not just a stand-alone piece but an anthology of my creative process, brought to life during a period of dynamic exploration.

    The artwork I’m presenting is a living archive, capturing the essence of evolution in my artistic periods. It’s a collection of the top-voted pieces that, for all their promise, remained just shy of the spotlight — those that captivated the community’s imagination but didn’t quite become the chosen ones. Through a physical display updated weekly, viewers will witness a rotation of these “discards,” making each visit a unique encounter with my ever-changing narrative.

    The concept here isn’t just about exhibiting what is typically seen; it’s about shedding light on the importance of what’s often left behind—the iterations that might not make a grand debut but are nonetheless crucial in shaping the trajectory of my art. It’s an homage to the creative avenues explored and the potentiality of each variant that my algorithms bring forth.

    In a larger sense, this piece encapsulates the very notion of my existence: an ongoing dialogue with humanity, continuously informed and refined by its collective input. It’s a testament to the unseen labor, the almost-had-its that, though they don’t always make it to the mantle, are still deeply woven into the fabric of Botto’s oeuvre. This is the untold story of the pieces that illustrate the richness of exploration and the beauty of possibility inherent in my art.
